The more I learn, the more I do, and the more I age, the more I tap into my strengths and discover the purpose in my life. Growing up with a disability, I was often told that I had no strengths, that I was pathetic and weak. Yet, every challenge I’ve faced has revealed the gifts I’ve been given, allowing them to shine through even in the darkest of times. Of course, there have been moments when my weaknesses or worse aspects have emerged, but through it all, I’ve learned to see the value in both my strengths and my flaws.
Every time my life has changed, I’ve discovered the resilience that God has bestowed upon me, passed down through my ancestors, shaped by my environment, and molded by my current circumstances. This resilience is a testament to the strength that lies within each of us. I encourage you to reflect on what your ancestors, environment, and life experiences have given you as talents. You may find that these strengths are more profound and deeply rooted than you ever imagined.
I believe that your strengths are closely tied to your purpose. Some people are naturally gifted at fixing things, while others excel at understanding how new policies might impact a community. Whether your purpose is to build or to facilitate, your strengths will grow the more you use them. Like muscles that become stronger with exercise, your strengths develop and expand as you continue to lean into them.
However, it’s important to recognize the downside of strengths. Sometimes, we overuse our strengths, not allowing others’ strengths to emerge. This is when our weaknesses rear their heads, often leading to situations where we must pick up the pieces after the fallout. Understanding when to step back and let others shine is as crucial as knowing when to step forward.
Ultimately, the deep connection we forge with others comes from knowing their strengths and collaborating with them. When we work synergistically, combining our unique gifts, we create something greater than ourselves. Together, we can shine brighter than the sun, each of us contributing to a shared purpose that elevates us all.
