Blooming Through Growth and Resilience

May 06, 20252 min read

May is a time of blooming flowers and vibrant sunshine, a reminder of the growth and renewal that happens naturally around us. For many, it’s also a time to celebrate mothers those who have nurtured, cared, and loved us through the ups and downs of life. But beyond the bouquets and brunches, there are often deeper, more complex stories we carry stories filled with struggle, love, culture clashes, and the ongoing journey of learning how to be a parent while still healing ourselves.

As I reflect on my own journey as a mother and daughter, I see more clearly now thanks to brain health education, faith, and years of self-development work how far I’ve come. My mother, born on the island of Kauaʻi, was raised in a life of simplicity and community. When the war broke out in the Philippines, she returned to her family's homeland and she was just 16 and married in an arranged marriage for protection. Despite facing many challenges, including a language barrier and raising me, a child with a disability, in a new culture, she did the best she could with the tools she had. Now, in my 50s, I see the beauty in how my parents’ resilience shaped who I am today.

As a mother myself, I’ve faced my own struggles navigating the challenges of raising children with learning and emotional difficulties, balancing financial strain, and dealing with my own disability. There were times I felt overwhelmed, but I realize now that even in the most difficult moments, a seed of resilience was quietly growing. Through God’s grace, self-awareness, and continuous learning, I’ve started to break free from generational cycles and heal. Just like flowers slowly unfurling, healing happens in its own time little by little. If you’re facing similar challenges, know that growth and healing are possible.

Let’s grow forward together.
