Focus on Paralympics

July 30, 20242 min read

The Olympics have started, and they're already excellent, with the spectacle of the French putting on a fabulous show with the opening ceremony. My eyes welled up when Celine Dion sang at the end of the ceremony, overcoming her debilitating symptoms. Her performance was a testament to resilience, reminding me of the incredible power of the human spirit to push through adversity.

My focus, however, is on the Paralympics in a month. My daughter told me that these athletes are true athletes, overcoming many obstacles. No matter their physical challenges, their mindset really sets them apart. Their stories inspire me, embodying the tenacity and courage I strive to have in my own life.

I once tried to qualify for the Paralympics as a swimmer. Unfortunately, I blew out my left ear while diving, losing my center and my guiding compass. This setback forced me to shift my focus. Despite the disappointment, I still loved being active. I embraced as many outdoor activities as possible, from hiking to bodyboarding. I made it a point to get to the gym to lift weights twice weekly, keeping my body strong and my spirits high.

Years later, I faced another challenge after having three children and staying active. My femur moved up my hip bone, causing sharp, gnawing pain for months. After a horrible first surgery and a corrective second surgery, I slowly made it back to doing regular tasks around the house. The recovery was tough, but with my determination and faith in God, I never wavered.

Getting back in the water, hiking, and reconnecting with nature became my therapy. We did a two-mile hike with our family from California and Hawaii. The famous Tab Matsumoto was our guide. With the help of my sons, my husband, and my great-niece and great-nephew, we made it through some rough spots. I know that when we revel in the outdoors and nature, we become witnesses of the abundance of God's love. I am so grateful for Access Surf, my husband Nick, who gave me confidence, and my new friend Arlene Calinao for trusting the process. Access Surf has many great surf instructors who allow people like me to catch waves while tandem surfing. Their support has been invaluable in my journey back to the activities I love.

This is why I look at the athletes in the Paralympics as people first. They are runners, tennis players, volleyball players, and swimmers who compete wholeheartedly. Their dedication and passion inspire me to play full out and work with my whole heart, no matter the obstacles. I hope you, too, find the strength and support to pursue your dreams with unwavering determination.
